Crisis Response: Implementing new mental health screening tools in British Columbia

The BC government announced that police agencies across South Vancouver Island will get access to HealthIM, a risk screening tool designed to help police evaluate and be better prepared to handle mental-health-related calls.

The digital public-safety tool is designed to help “effectively de-escalate complex situations by promoting safer interactions with people in crisis.”

Some of HeathIM’s benefits include facilitating a better assessment of people in crisis, using consistent clinical language which improves communication with doctors and nurses, providing specific safety and de-escalation tactics for trauma-informed response, alerting health-care partners of incoming patients, flagging violent behavior, and more.
