Business Continuity: The disappearing desire for leadership

“Developing future leaders is essential to ensuring business continuity,” writes Jeffrey R. Smith in an article for Human Resources Director, in which he discusses why there seems to be a growing number of employees no longer striving for leadership or management positions.

This issue is not unique to one industry alone. Smith warns against blaming an overarching “lack of ambition” and instead ask ourselves if we have unintentionally designed deeply unappealing leadership roles. Accountability, complexity and risk have all scaled up, but support, recognition and rewards have not.

“Leadership no longer represents career progression—it represents personal sacrifice,” explains Smith. To ensure business continuity and future resilient leadership, organizations may need to rethink leadership expectations altogether.
