Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina: Twenty Years Later
Twenty years have passed since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, yet its legacy as a national tragedy and a critical learning moment endures. Beyond the immense human suffering and physical destruction, Katrina exposed deep systemic failures—and, in its aftermath, prompted significant improvements in preparedness, response, and infrastructure.
This catastrophic event left a deep impression on author Kathy Rainey, who was at the time – publisher of the Disaster Resource GUIDE. The reality — human networks and entire social organizations collapsed. These social networks, especially in low-income neighborhoods, were crucial to people’s survival. They were fractured in the storm. Yet, and even today, as Kathy cautions, many vulnerabilities remain unresolved.
Here are 9 lessons learned over the past two decades.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Should I Stay or Should I Go, by the English punk rock band The Clash, comes to mind as I dream and brainstorm for the next phase of the Risk and Resilience HUB. This lively 1982 rock n’ roll classic ponders the prospects and hopes for an ongoing relationship. (Take a listen, it will make you smile!) This fall marks my 40th year in the world of BC/DR/EM/GRC. Recently, some have asked why I am still doing this work. The simple answer is that I am a matchmaker – passionate about connecting people and organizations – to each other and to valuable resources and solutions. I reflected on this question in a recent article on the HUB. In regard to our relationship …. many of you started reading the annual Disaster Resource GUIDE in 1996 and now are engaged as authors, collaborators, contributors and readers of the Risk and Resilience HUB. Thank you! If you find the Continuity eGuide and HUB valuable, would you partner with me to make the HUB relevant and useful to professionals around the world? Dale Carnegie once said, "People support what they help create."
