Disaster Recovery: How machine learning can help strengthen recovery process

Zaishang Li, Dina D’ayala, Nan Li, Jiaxu Huang, and Mukun Liu released a new article in volume 2 of Civil Engineering Sciences examining how machine learning (ML) is being used to support infrastructure recovery after natural disasters.

Researchers from University College London and Tsinghua University analyzed 57 academic studies looking at power grids, water supply networks, telecommunications, transportation, and more.

They found three main ways ML is increasingly being used: characterizing the recovery process, predicting recovery outcomes, and optimizing recovery strategies.
